Custom domain, embed, redirects and tracking code — common questions

Short answers about putting your Renta site on your own web address, adding Renta booking to a site you already have, and the technical settings under Website and Settings.

Common questions

How do I connect my own domain, like bookings.mybusiness.com?

Go to Settings → Custom Domain, type the address you want in the Your domain box (for example `shop.yourdomain.com`, or just `yourdomain.com`) and press Save Domain. Renta then lists the DNS records (the settings that point a domain at a website) under DNS records to add. Sign in to the company where you bought the domain (GoDaddy, Namecheap, Cloudflare and so on), add those records, then press Check DNS. When it works the badge turns Active and you see "DNS verified — your domain is now active!" See Connecting your own domain name.

What exactly do I type in the domain box?

The address customers should use, with no page after it. If you paste `https://Shop.YourDomain.com/about`, Renta strips the `https://`, the path and the capital letters. You can have one custom domain per shop: saving a different address replaces the current one.

Which DNS records do I have to add?

The table shows Type, Host, Value and TTL (how long a change takes to spread), with a Copy button on each row. For an address like `shop.yourdomain.com` it is a single CNAME record. For a root domain such as `yourdomain.com` you add either the ALIAS / ANAME record (some providers call it "CNAME flattening") or the A record, not both, and you add the `www` record as well. Use the "Step-by-step (most registrars)" list under the table if you have not edited DNS before.

What do Pending DNS, Active and Error mean?

Pending DNS means Renta has saved your domain but cannot see the records yet. Active means the records are correct and visitors reach your site. Error means something is wrong; a notice on the page says what.

How long does it take, and is it checking by itself?

Changes usually take 5 to 30 minutes and can take up to 24 hours. While the badge says Pending DNS, the page re-checks every 30 seconds ("Auto-checking every 30s…") for about 10 minutes, and you can press Check DNS at any time. After that, come back later and press Check DNS again.

What is "Add Vercel verification record" and "Verify with Vercel"?

Sometimes Renta's hosting provider (Vercel) wants proof you own the domain before it will serve it. A card appears with one or more TXT records. Add them at your registrar once, then press Verify with Vercel. The page checks every 20 seconds for about 10 minutes ("Checking automatically every 20s…").

It says "This domain is already connected to another Vercel account". What do I do?

A previous site or developer set the domain up on a different Vercel account. Sign in to that account and remove the domain from that project (Project → Settings → Domains), then press Save Domain again. You never need to transfer or hand your domain to Renta.

It says "This hostname is already registered to another account".

That address is already in use by a different shop on Renta. Use a different address, or contact Renta support if the domain is yours.

It says "Invalid hostname format".

Enter only a real domain name such as `shop.yourdomain.com`: letters, numbers, hyphens and dots, with no spaces. An IP address or something that is not a registrable domain is refused.

Visitors can't open the www version of my domain.

You will see "www.yourdomain.com is not configured". Add the `www` CNAME record from the DNS table too, then press Check DNS again.

My domain is connected but customers don't reach my Renta site.

If you also set an External App URL, it sends storefront visitors away from Renta entirely, and the Custom Domain page shows a warning about it. Remove or change it under External app redirect.

Is https (the padlock) set up for me?

Yes. Once the domain is attached the security certificate is issued automatically. The page shows "Vercel attached — your hostname is registered on Renta's project and SSL will issue automatically."

Does my old Renta address stop working after I connect my domain?

Your address ending in `/shops/` and your shop name still reaches the same pages, but Google is told your own domain is the main address.

Who can change the domain?

Owners and managers. It sits with the website settings and needs website-editing permission.

How do I add a Book Now button to a website I already have (WordPress, Squarespace, Wix)?

Go to Settings → Embed Widget. Choose Popup (a floating Book Now button that opens booking in an overlay) or Inline / on-page (the booking flow appears right in the page), press Copy under the code, and paste it into your other site. Bookings made there come into your Renta dashboard. See Adding a "Book Now" button to another website.

Can I use my own button or link instead of the floating one?

Yes, in Popup mode. Put `class="renta-book-now"` on any button or link on your page. Developers can also call `window.Renta.open()` to open it, `window.Renta.open({ itemId: 'slug' })` to open one rental, and `window.Renta.close()` to close it.

How do I open the booking window on one specific rental?

Add the `data-item` option to the script tag with that rental's slug (the part of its web address), or call `window.Renta.open({ itemId: 'slug' })`. The settings page lists these under Script options.

How do I test the embed before putting it on my real site?

Press Open widget preview under Try it now. It opens a sandbox page that loads your embed script and your live catalog.

How do I change the button text or hide descriptions in the embed?

Under Widget settings set Default button text (up to 80 characters; it cannot be empty) and Show item descriptions to Preview (default), Expandable, Always shown or Hidden, then press Save. The default text is used for the floating button when you have not added your own `renta-book-now` elements.

What do the widget numbers mean?

Widget analytics covers the last 30 days: Modal opens (the booking window was opened), Booking starts, Completions (finished bookings) and Conversion. Revenue from widget bookings is shown below when there is any. It reads "No widget events yet" until the embed is live and customers use it.

How do I send old links to the right new page?

Go to Settings → URL Redirects, press + Add redirect, fill in Old address (like `/products/moto-boots`) and New address (like `/rental/moto-boots`), choose Covers and How long, and press Save redirect. See Redirecting old page links to new ones.

What is the difference between "Just this address" and "This address and everything under it"?

Just this address redirects only that exact link. This address and everything under it also redirects every page below it, which suits a whole old section. In the list these show as "just this" and "+ everything under it".

Should I choose Permanent or Temporary?

Pick Permanent for a lasting move; it tells Google to update its links. Use Temporary for a short-term change you expect to undo.

Can I add lots of redirects at once?

Yes, in Import a list of redirects. Type one pair per line, such as `/collections/all → /fleet` or `/products/moto-boots, /rental/moto-boots, exact`, or press Upload CSV. Lines starting with `#` are ignored and full web addresses copied from Google Search Console work too. Press Preview import to see each row as New, Updates existing or Skipped, then press the Import button. Nothing is saved until you do.

Why was my redirect rejected?

The new address must start with `/` (a page on your site) or `https://` (another site, not `http://`). The old and new addresses cannot be the same, and Renta refuses a redirect that would create a chain of redirects.

Why isn't my redirect working?

A redirect only applies when the old address has no live page. If a published page already uses that address, visitors see the page. Check the redirect's On switch has not been turned Off, and press Test in its row. The Hits column counts how often it has been used.

How do I install Google Analytics or Google Tag Manager?

Go to Settings → Analytics and paste your Google Analytics 4 Measurement ID (starts with `G-`) and/or Google Tag Manager Container ID (starts with `GTM-`), then press Save. See Installing Google Analytics or Tag Manager.

Why does Analytics say "Available on a paid plan"?

Installing your own Google Analytics, Tag Manager and Google Ads tracking is part of Renta's paid plan; only accounts with an active (or past-due) subscription can use it. Press View plans to upgrade. See Your plan and billing.

Why isn't my Google tracking showing visits?

These tags run only on your public storefront pages, never in your Renta dashboard. In the EU, UK and Australia (and where a visitor's location is unknown) they wait until the visitor accepts the cookie banner Renta shows automatically. In other places, including the US, they run until the visitor rejects it. A visitor who rejects, or whose browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal, is not sent to your Google account anywhere. Renta's own visitor numbers in Insights do not depend on this; see Renta's own tracking vs. yours.

What are the Google Ads Conversion ID and Conversion Label?

They let Google Ads see which ad clicks became bookings. The ID looks like `AW-123456789` and the label like `AbC-D_efGhI`; Google shows them together as `AW-123456789/AbC-D_efGhI`, and you can paste the whole thing into the ID box. Without the label the tag loads but no bookings are reported.

How do I add my own tracking code, chat widget or verification tag?

Go to Settings → Custom Code. Under Your storefront use Header code (runs before the page appears; for verification tags) or Footer code (runs after the page loads; for chat widgets and pixels, where most code belongs). Your dashboard has the same two boxes but runs only for your team. Each box takes up to 20,000 characters. See Adding your own tracking code or scripts.

Why doesn't my custom code run at checkout?

On purpose. For your customers' safety Renta will not run it on pages where a card is entered: your checkout, your payment links, and the booking and customer pages where staff take payments.
