Testing the kiosk with practice customers

Walk through pick-up, return and tips on the kiosk with a practice customer and Stripe's test card, with no real money, no real door code and no effect on your reports.

Where to find it

Kiosk (sidebar) → Try kiosk, or a locked tablet. Practice customers are listed at Customers

You can test every part of the kiosk with one of your three practice customers (Practice Customer 1, 2 and 3) and Stripe's test card. Practice bookings run the full flow on your real items, but nothing about them counts as real business. For what practice customers are in general, see Practice customers: try your checkout safely.

Where to find it

  • The easiest way is Kiosk → Try kiosk, which lists practice bookings to tap. See Try kiosk: preview your kiosk before customers use it.
  • You can also use a real locked tablet. A locked kiosk finds all of your bookings, practice ones included, by last name and phone number. Practice customers are listed at Customers, marked "Practice".

What is safe on a practice booking

  • Payments and tips run in Stripe's test mode (Stripe is the company that processes card payments), so no real money moves. Use the test card 4242 4242 4242 4242 (Stripe's standard test card).
  • No real door code. A practice booking never gets a real code, because it would open a real lock. A self-serve pick-up ends at "Your gear is ready — see the counter."
  • Staff notifications start with "Practice:", so they never read like a real customer at the counter.
  • Practice bookings are left out of your revenue reports, and a real gift card cannot be used on one.

Test pick-up

1. At Bookings → New booking, book a practice customer with a pickup time today. See Creating a booking yourself. 2. In Try kiosk, open Here to pick up and tap the booking under Try as a practice customer. On a real tablet, type the practice customer's name as the last name and their phone number instead. The kiosk matches the end of the full name, so "Customer 1" works for "Practice Customer 1". If the customer record has no phone number, add one with Edit on the Customers page first. 3. Work through the steps. Try both Gear hand-off choices in your settings to see the difference. See Pick up at the kiosk.

Test return and tips

1. The booking must be Active. Either finish a self-serve pick-up on the kiosk, or press Start on the booking. See Starting a rental: the pickup checkout and the payment check. 2. In Try kiosk, open Start return and pick the booking, or look it up by name and phone. 3. Go through the photos, checklist and damage question, then try a tip with the test card. See Returning gear at the kiosk and Tips at the kiosk.

What you cannot test with a practice customer

  • A real door code. Use a real booking on a real lock for that, ideally your own.
  • Reserve now, which runs your real checkout and is switched off in Try kiosk. Use Try checkout instead.

Good to know

  • The preview changes the practice booking for real. A self-serve pick-up can make it Active and an automatic return can complete it, so you may need a new practice booking for each run.
  • Owners and managers can delete all practice bookings at once with Clear practice bookings on the Bookings page.
