Common questions: the setup checklist and the setup guide
Quick answers about the dashboard setup checklist (what each item checks and how to fix it) and the Setup guide tour (three levels, how a step works, skipping, replaying, and hiding it).
Where to find it
Dashboard → Setup Checklist card; sidebar → Setup guide
Quick answers about the two things that guide your setup. The setup checklist on your dashboard checks the money-related basics against your real settings. The Setup guide is a click-along tour with three levels.
Where to find it
The checklist is the dark card near the top of your dashboard titled "Finish setting up before you take money". The Setup guide is the Setup guide button at the bottom of the sidebar, and the banner on the dashboard.
Questions and answers
What is the setup checklist?
A card on your dashboard that shows "N of M essentials done" with a progress bar and the items still open. Each item is re-checked against your real settings, so it is not a box you tick by hand. See The dashboard setup checklist.
What does the checklist check?
Six things. Five are essentials: Connect Stripe so you can get paid, Publish at least one rental item, Set a price on every published item, Decide your security-deposit policy, and Finish your rental waiver. One is recommended: Publish your checkout flow.
How do I fix each checklist item?
Each item has a button that takes you to the right page:
- Connect Stripe: Open Stripe settings (Settings → Stripe).
- Publish an item: Open fleet.
- Set a price: Fix pricing.
- Deposit policy: Set deposits.
- Waiver: Open waivers.
- Checkout flow: Edit checkout flow (Settings → Checkout Flow).
Why does the checklist say a Stripe account is linked but customers can't pay?
The note reads "A Stripe account is linked but Stripe has not enabled charges on it yet. Customers cannot pay until it does." Finish Stripe's onboarding (open Settings → Stripe and press Open onboarding). See Common questions: Stripe and payouts.
What does "We could not reach Stripe to check this account" mean?
Renta could not ask Stripe right now, so it shows the item as unresolved rather than guessing. Open Stripe settings to confirm.
Why does it say a price item is open when I have prices?
The check looks at every published item. It flags any published item whose rates are all $0, with a note like "1 published item has every rate at $0 — it would book for free." Open Fix pricing.
What does "This does not apply to my business" do?
It records a decision instead of a fix. It only appears on two items: the deposit policy (when no published item holds a deposit) and the waiver (when you have no active waiver template). Renta then shows "You recorded that this business does not take security deposits" or "...does not use waivers."
Why did a checklist item come back after I finished it?
The checklist is re-checked against your settings each time, so it reopens if something changes. For example, if Stripe stops allowing charges, the Stripe item returns.
Why did the checklist disappear?
It hides itself once all the essential items are settled and none is unresolved. The recommended item, Publish your checkout flow, does not keep it open.
What does "Publish your checkout flow" check?
That at least one checkout step is published, and that, if you have an active waiver, one of those steps is your waiver. Otherwise the note says customers are never asked to sign during checkout. See Designing your checkout steps.
What is the Setup guide?
A tour that shows you how each setup task is done on your real screens, then lets you do it. Open it with the Setup guide button at the bottom of the sidebar, or the dashboard banner button "Let us walk you through building out your software". See The guided setup tour.
What are the three levels?
- Open for business (12 steps): business profile, logo and brand colors, pickup location, fleet category, first fleet item, waiver, cancellation policy, checkout and deposits, customize your dashboard, website, practice booking, and connect Stripe to open your site.
- Run it better (10 steps): invite your team, seasonal pricing, bundle discounts, coupons, gift cards, email templates, custom domain, Google reviews, kiosk, and maintenance templates.
- Advanced (8 steps): AI assistant and chatbot, Viator & GetYourGuide, Google Analytics & Search Console, QuickBooks, smart locks, embed booking widget, extra locations, and redirects.
How does a tour step work?
A card shows where you are and says "Watch how it's done…" while a ghost cursor shows the clicks. Press Skip demo → to skip ahead. The card then says "Your turn". Do the task on the page, and the bottom bar changes from "Not saved yet" to done once the setting is really saved. Next stays greyed out until then.
Can I watch a step again or go back?
Yes. Press ↺ Replay this step to see the demo again and Back to return to the previous step. The bottom bar also has Stuck? Ask for help.
How do I leave the tour and pick it up later?
Use Exit on the bottom bar. Open the Setup guide panel later and press Continue on a level to jump to your first unfinished step. A finished level shows Replay instead.
What does the "Not relevant to me" box do?
Tick it to mark that step as not applying to you so you can move on. Not every step allows it, and the Stripe and go-live step does not.
How do I hide the setup banner, and get it back?
Press the X on the dashboard banner ("Hide setup guide for 7 days"). To bring it back sooner, open the Setup guide panel and press Show setup banner again; it returns the next time you load the dashboard.
Why is a step missing from my Setup guide?
Steps that depend on a feature that is not switched on for your account, such as Google reviews or Viator & GetYourGuide, can be missing from your list.
Can I do the Setup guide on my phone?
You can, but the banner says "Best on a computer — some setup steps need a bigger screen." On a phone the tour card sits along the bottom of the screen.
