Backup codes if you lose your authenticator

One-time backup codes that get you back into your account if your two-factor authenticator app is unavailable.

Where to find it

Settings → Security → Recovery codes section

Recovery codes are one-time backup codes you can use to log in if you ever lose access to your two-factor authenticator app.

Where to find it

Settings → Security → Recovery codes section (only shown once you've set up two-factor authentication).

How it works

  • Recovery codes remaining — shows how many unused backup codes you still have.
  • View/Save codes button — displays your recovery codes so you can download or print them for safekeeping. Each code works only once.
  • Regenerate codes button — creates a brand new set of codes, which invalidates the old set. Only an Owner can do this, and it's meant to be used when you're running low.

Example

If your phone breaks and you can't get a code from your authenticator app, you can use one of your saved recovery codes to log in instead, then set up two-factor again on a new device.

Good to know

  • Each recovery code can only be used once — save them somewhere safe, since they're your only way in if your authenticator app is unavailable.
  • Regenerating codes invalidates every old code immediately, so make sure you've saved the new set before discarding the old one.
