Payment security and ID verification: common questions
Quick answers on 3D Secure (extra bank verification), the Payment security card, the ID verification (Stripe Identity) card, the threshold, what customers see when asked to verify, and the Payment unavailable message.
Where to find it
Checkout (left sidebar) → Client view tab → Payment security and ID verification cards
Short answers about the two protections on your checkout: extra bank verification and a photo-ID check. Each answer links to the full article.
Payment security (3D Secure)
Where are these settings?
Checkout in the left sidebar → Client view tab. The Payment security and ID verification (Stripe Identity) cards sit side by side at the top, above the checkout steps.
What is 3D Secure?
An extra check a customer's own bank can ask for before a card payment goes through, such as a one-time code or a bank-app approval. It also shifts some fraud-dispute liability toward the bank. See Requiring extra bank verification for payments.
What are the three options?
Automatic (recommended): the bank decides when to verify, and most checkouts skip the extra step. Always require: every checkout gets bank verification, even if the bank would not normally ask. Off: Renta never requests bank verification, which the card marks "Not recommended — you carry more fraud liability." New accounts start on Automatic.
What is the "Only require above" box?
It only shows when Always require is selected. Set a dollar amount and bank verification is forced only for payments at or above it; smaller payments fall back to Automatic. Set it to 0 to require verification on every payment. If you switch to Automatic or Off, the amount is not used.
Which should I choose?
Automatic is the recommended choice for most shops because it adds a bank check only where the bank thinks it is needed. Choose Always require (with a threshold) if you want extra protection on large bookings. Turn it Off only if you accept carrying more fraud liability.
My change did not save.
Press Save at the bottom of the card; "Saved" appears next to it when it worked. Saving needs permission to edit settings, so a view-only account cannot save.
ID verification (Stripe Identity)
What does ID verification do?
Before a customer can pay for a high-value booking, Renta asks them to confirm who they are with a photo ID check run by Stripe. It protects against stolen cards and fake identities on your biggest rentals. See Requiring a photo ID before high-value bookings.
How do I turn it on?
Tick Require ID verification for high-value rentals, set the Threshold ($), and press Save. It is off by default, and the threshold starts at $1,000.
Why is the Threshold box greyed out?
Verification is switched off. The box is disabled until you tick the checkbox ("This amount is ignored while verification is turned off above.").
Who gets asked, and who is not?
A customer is asked when verification is on, the amount due for that payment is at or above your threshold, and they have not already been verified. A customer who has verified once is not asked again.
What does it cost?
Stripe charges about $1.50 per verification, and only customers at or above your threshold are asked.
What does the customer see?
On the payment page, a box reads "Quick ID check required" and says "For rentals over this amount, we require a quick ID check before payment — it takes about a minute," with a Verify my identity button. Until they finish, the pay button reads "Complete ID verification to continue" and is greyed out. If it fails, they see "We couldn't verify your ID" with a Try again button.
Can a customer skip the ID check?
No. It is enforced on Renta's servers when the payment is created, not just on the page.
Payment problems customers see
A customer sees "Payment unavailable" and a message about Stripe. What does it mean?
Your shop has not finished connecting Stripe, so card payments cannot be taken. The customer sees "This shop hasn't finished connecting Stripe yet, so card payments can't be taken right now." and, if you have a business phone number, "Please call [number] to complete your booking." Finish connecting Stripe in your payment settings. See Connecting Stripe to accept payments.
A customer says their payment page says the reservation expired.
Their hold on the items ran out (10 minutes on the storefront). The page asks them to choose their dates again.
